Life at the Crossroads (LATC) is a 30 lesson curriculum ideally designed to provide one year’s worth of weekly, 45 minute lessons. The lessons are highly interactive, incorporating games, stories, small group discussions and activities, role playing and personal-reflection journaling. LATC teaches students how to develop good character in different spheres of their lives. Growing in good character, students become mature persons, able to make decisions based on respect, responsibility and compassion toward themselves and others.

LATC explores the value of each person, as special individuals created by God, and from that perspective, encourages students to embrace a personal, risk elimination strategy. The consequences of sexual activity before and outside marriage are examined and the relevance and wisdom of abstinence before marriage and monogamy after marriage -risk elimination- are developed.

The curriculum’s main focus is character development through the transformation of values within the individual. Lessons 11 and 12 present Jesus as a role model of character through the Jesus film. The last unit includes a contemporary version of the Prodigal Son with a discussion on the forgiveness found in Christ.

Key Features of the Curriculum:

1. Seeks to prevent AIDS and other STI’s through the safest method – abstinence:
a. The only real way to solve the AIDS epidemic is to choose abstinence before marriage and fidelity within marriage.
b. Abstinence and fidelity are behavioral choices.
c. Healthy behavioral choices are outcomes of ones beliefs, values and character.
d. The best way to change one’s beliefs, values and character is internally, through a relationship with God.

2. Based on Judeo-Christian values, presented in a non-religious, non-proselytizing way - causing the student to investigate the biblical documents and to reach his or her own conclusions without infringing upon his / her religious affiliation

3. Presents Jesus Christ, a universally accepted character model, as the role model of good character

4. Covers the most recent, medically accurate, basic information on HIV/AIDS and other STI’s from a scientific perspective.

5. Involves and draws in parents and community members, synergistically creating a supportive environment for students to grow in good character.

6. Involves the students in small groups where they can share their more personal insights in an atmosphere of confidence and accountability

7. Helps community schools become “Model Schools” in which the entire faculty adopts a unified character development strategy, creating a safe and supportive environment in which students can grow to maturity.
